Our competitive team competes at all major DanceSport competitions Regionally, Provincially and Nationally. Those that make the 1st Team train 3-5 times a week and are selected to represent the university at the USSA games .
These are dancers that might not want to compete just yet but are trained to the same technique standard as the 1st Team. Being less competitive means they meet less frequently but will still get the chance to compete locally and can try out for bigger competitions like inter-varsity.
Not everything we do in the club is just competitions. We love to entertain and put on a show - some members prefer the lime light and take part in perfomances, showcases and exhibitions alike. This kind of DanceSport focuses on group work and will sometimes highlight individual talents.
This is the largest DanceSport competition for tertiary institutions. Over 19 registered institutions battle it out in the sections, Individual (level 1-4 and dress section), Team Match and Formation. In 2015 Rhodes placed 3rd in the Formation section.
Our Annual Sport Awards was a huge success. The prestigious Ballroom and Latin couple trophy was up for grabs again as well as the Male and Female dancer of the year for Ballroom an Latin. The club also highlighted the Rising stars.
Membership is obtained through Rhodes Sports Admin signup process which happens just after O-week. Fees are paid annually and will include the coaching you require for the year. Competitive members will receive a reduced fee on competitions and access to workshops, bootcamps and external group training. The club meets Monday, Wednesday from 7:15pm and Saturday from 10am in the aerobics hall located in the Rhodes University Health Suite. Depending on your level of experience you will be assigned to a class. Particular information about practice and sign up this year can be found on our facebook page.
